How do companies issue press releases and who do they release them to?

I always see that companies release press releases. Who do they release them to and how do they release them? Do they just call their local newspaper and give them a story? How do other media outlets pick up the press release?

  1. They can do press releases 'in house' that is, write the story as it appears in the papers, and send it to the editors of the papers and magazines that they want to run the story. This is now ususally done by email. Or they can use a consultant or a p.r. company to do it for them. Occasionally, if a story is very good or particularly interesting, a reporter from the paper or magazine may call and follow up for more information to do a more in-depth story. If you are interested in submitting press releases, you should do a search on how to write a good one, and then you can find the email addresses for the media outlets from their web sites, and start sending them out.
